The government's health officials told dieters and body builders to stop using Hydroxycut. It is linked to serious liver damage and death.
The FDA stated that the company has agreed with them to recall fourteen products.
Dr. Linda Katz, who works for the FDA's food and nutrition department stated that twenty-three cases of liver problems have been reported and the death of a nineteen year old male from the Southwest. Even though this young male died in 2007, the FDA did not find out about it until March of this year.
Other consumers suffered from anything between jaundice and liver failure. One consumer needs a liver transplant. These consumers were healthy and did not have these issues until they took Hydroxycut.
Lovate Health Studies makes the diet supplements, they stated online "While this is a small number of reports relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products over the years, out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is our priority, we are voluntarily recalling these Hydroxycut-branded products." Consumer will receive a refund if they return to the store they bought them.
The manufacturers of these diet supplements do not need to prove to the FDA the their products are safe.
Doctor Katz stated that it has taken this long to cease this Hydroxycut problem because the cases of liver problems were rare.
The FDA depends of voluntary reports for these issues, but a lot of times they are never reported.
Health officials do not know what ingredients are toxic because the formula have been changed several times..
Ano Lobb, public health researcher studied Hydroxyvut stated that the hydroxycitric acid may be the cause. The hydroxycitric acid form a tropical fruit that has been linked to liver problems.
Lobb stated "You really have to be careful about dietary supplements, especially weight-loss supplements, especially weight-loss pills, people believe that the FDA has verified that these products are at lease safe and effective, and that's really not the case. When you see fantastic claims that's generally what they are."
